FAQ

Yay! I have an FAQ! I decided that any question that's asked more than once is, technically, frequently asked. Please bear in mind that I didn't define it so because I'm desperate or anything. ... Anyway, this is organised roughly according to how often the questions are asked. (I think you can guess which ones only just qualified as frequent.)

Are you Bobbin? Are you Jane? Are you JaneBobbin? Who's Ping Ping in real life? How about Brett/Flora/Uni/DemonWoman?

I'm supposed to look like Bobbin. As for the personality, I'm more Bobbin than Jane, but I can be Jane if I want to... Ok, this is hard. When I set up a gag, I need one person to be the 'retarded' one and another to be sensible (and usually, mean). So, according to the situation, I switch the roles around, although Bobbin's most often the one who's retarded (she's nicer, more gullible, innocent, naive etc) and Jane's the sarcastic one. I think in real life I speak like Bobbin, but I expect people to reply like Jane. Yes, that's it! Ok. So, I'm sort of JaneBobbin. None of my friends look like Jane, although sometimes I see girls around who look like they could fit the role.

As for the other characters - Ping Ping Guo is supposed to be my real life friend (whose character, if exaggerated, could be like PPG herself). Flora Chan looks like my real life friend as well and I like to think her character's (hehheh) like that, although it really isn't. Flora Chan, by the way, is the name of my most loathed Hong Kong actress. Seriously, check her out, she looks like a crocodile. Uni is noone in particular; DW wasn't, originally, but my friend informed me that she wanted to be her, so, well, I guess she is. Brett is definitely based on someone. I used to have a crush on him (note: used to) and I think Brett looks a lot like him. I don't know his personality, but apparently it's not very nice, so I just gave Brett the personality that would serve my purposes. Wow, serve my purposes... that sounds wicked. Nah he's probably a nice guy. Most people are, at heart.

What's your strip creation process?

I draw everything in Adobe Photoshop but sometimes when I doodle and happen to draw something nice, or it's a special sort of graphic, I scan the drawings in. When I chance upon something nice, I use it relentlessly.

You draw everything with the computer?!

Yes. I am Mistress of the Mouse.

If these are the New Adventures of Bobbin, then what about the old ones?

They weren't really called the Old Adventures of Bobbin, because that makes it sound like Bobbin's a geriatric - which she's not. A long time ago, me and my friend made up a superhero called Crapman. He had a trusty sidekick called Shit and this was actually Bobbin, but not exactly. As in, she looked like Bobbin and she was based on me, but that's all. A few years later, me and another friend wanted to make a short film based on Crapman and Shit but were told to "drop the toilet humour" by the teacher-in-charge (seriously, some people are just anal retentive). So we changed Shit to Bobbin. (Get it? Batman and Robin, Crapman and ... ?) By the way, the film was called "Crapman and Bobbin: The Attack of the Mutant Mother Squid from HELL". After that was over, I just used Bobbin and placed her in this context, although it's just the husk of her former self. Awww...

I like the New Adventures more, though.

Is Jane Caucasian?

No. She's Jane Tan and she's Chinese.

Then why is she a redhead?

Dye.

Why don't you use Keenspace?

See, according to the poll, readers' opinions vary a lot. Almost half like Keenspace, while a third are ok with anything, and a fifth say things like "KEENSPACE ATE MY BABIES!!!", so this deserves longer deliberation, I think.

What the !@#$ is Milo?!

It's my favourite drink. Essentially, it's liquid chocolate and I like it cold, but the manufacturers insist on stressing that it's a 'sports drink' that's now 'boosted with extra vitamins B!' or whatever, which must be utter crap because any athlete that drinks that much Milo (which, by the way, is easier to consume than solid chocolate) probably won't be qualifying for any international sporting events, you know?

Will you marry me?

That's sweet, but we really should take things slow.

Ok. What things do you do in an undressed state?

Like I said, we really should take things slow.

I love you!

Nice try.

About the Cartoonist

Joycelyn Yik is a girl who turned 20 on the 8th of February, 2004. She is studying in the US but keeps dreaming about Singapore food. Because she's from Singapore!

Because it will not improve site traffic, she will not reveal her vital statistics. This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she is embarrassed of them. She will, however, reveal that she is 1.72 m tall, which happens to be the same height as Nanako Matshushima, one of her most revered Japanese idols. Unfortunately, her weight is, ahem, slightly dissimilar to Ms Matsushima's. Also, she looks more like Bobbin than Jane. She has no qualms about borrowing from real-life situations and personal experiences to use as content for the comic. These include unfunny jokes she cracked in the real world which nobody laughed at. This is her way of releasing her pent up anger and disappointment.

Joyce likes music (The Cardigans, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Ash, Hole, Suede, Blur, Mansun etc), Playstation games, celebrities (Brett Anderson, Nina Persson, Alyson Hannigan, Shirley Manson (why do they all end with 'n'?), Nanako Matsushima, Hideaki (look-I-have-nipples! And I'm topless!) Takizawa, a lot of other stuff she can't really remember, and her friends and family.

Things she severely dislikes includes cinema idiots, Peanuts (as in the comic), Macs, and dirt.

If you want to see her photo (as well as some of her sis) you can go to this well-concealed page.

Joycelyn now realises that talking in the third person is quite lame, but it's too late.
